Connect Two
Thinksheets

Connect Two is a simple but powerful strategy for building vocabulary, background knowledge, and confidence before students read.

The idea is straightforward: students are given a list of key words and asked to connect them in ways that make sense to them. Initially, there's no single “right” answer so if a student can explain their thinking, the connection counts. When students generate connections instead of being handed definitions, they remember the words better and feel more confident using them.

I’ve used Connect Twos across content areas (even in professional development) because they quickly reveal what students already know, what they’re guessing at, and what they’re completely unsure about. They work as both a low-stress pre-assessment and a powerful discussion tool.

Download the exact thinksheets I've use with students, along with examples, time-saving tips, and guidance on how I grade them. The goal is that you can then create your own two columns for your content area. If questions come up, email me at TovaniCris@gmail.com. I’m happy to chat.
